Our Mountain Story

I was born and raised in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in Upper East Tennessee — where the Appalachian Trail runs right through the land I grew up on. Trails, waterfalls, creeks, lakes, and rivers were not just scenery — they were home.

These mountains shaped everything I am. The skills my parents and grandparents passed down — how to survive, how to build, how to endure — became a blessing I didn't fully understand until Hurricane Helene re-mapped the entire region from Western North Carolina through East Tennessee. I had family members whose homes were washed clean off their foundations. The land we love was torn open.

But we are resourceful and abundant survivors. Those "raisin' skills" — the ones passed down through generations of mountain people — proved to be a blessing in the storm. This is what Appalachian Joes is built on: the grit, the grace, and the deep roots of this mountain culture.

"It's where EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON, and your landing here is not an accident. We thank you for stopping in!"

Standing Strong After Hurricane Helene

September 2024 — Hurricane Helene re-mapped the entire region from Western North Carolina through East Tennessee, leaving devastation across the mountains we call home.

🏠

Homes Washed Away

Entire homes were lifted off their foundations by floodwaters. Family members lost everything in minutes. The rivers and creeks we grew up playing in became forces of destruction.

💪

Mountain Resilience

But Appalachian people know how to survive. The "raisin' skills" passed down through generations — how to build, how to preserve, how to endure — proved to be a blessing in the storm.

🙏

A Community Unbroken

Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers became family. The mountains that shaped us also sheltered us. We are still here — resourceful, abundant, and grateful for every day.

"These 'raisin' skills' are a blessing in times like these — and an honor to my parents and grandparents who taught me how to stand when the ground gives way."

A Story Never Written Down

— Cherokee Heritage & A Grandmother's Courage —

My Cherokee heritage is not found in any official record. It was carried quietly, in the way my maternal grandmother moved through the world — with a grace and a knowing that no document could capture, and a courage that history chose not to write down.

My grandmother was a full-blood Cherokee woman, born and raised on Cherokee land in Cherokee, North Carolina. Her parents were elders who ran a small Mercantile — a trading post of their own — in the heart of the Cherokee community. She was raised in a world of deep tradition, tight community, and ancient mountain ways.

She was married very young to an older man chosen by her parents. He was an alcoholic and brutally abusive. She received no protection from her own family. She understood, with the clarity that only survival can bring, that the only way to end the abuse was to leave — to divorce him. But divorce was "unheard of" by the bylaws of Cherokee culture and considered morally unacceptable in the early 1900s.

She made the bravest decision of her life. With the help of a "white man" who rescued her, she walked away from everything she had ever known — her home, her parents, her brothers and sisters, her community. She was written out of the books. Erased from the records. As if she had never existed.

But she did exist. She thrived. She later married the man who helped rescue her — a Godly man. She became a beautiful, humble Christian woman who never lost the spiritual depth of the only life she had known. She continued her Cherokee ways quietly, honoring the land, the seasons, and the sacred knowledge passed down through her people.

I never knew who her parents were. I never knew her brothers and sisters. Her Cherokee name, her clan, her lineage — all of it was severed by the brutal circumstances of her marriage and the rigid customs of her time. There is no official record of her as a Cherokee woman. There is no documentation of her courage.

But I carry her. In my blood, in my love for these mountains, in the way I believe that everything happens for a reason — even the hardest things. She was not written into the history books, but she is written into me.

"She was brave and courageous in a time when bravery had no witness and courage had no reward — except survival itself."

— In honor of my Cherokee grandmother

A note on documentation: Many Cherokee families — especially those who left the community under difficult circumstances in the early 20th century — have no official tribal enrollment records. This does not diminish the reality of their heritage, their blood, or their story. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians continues to honor and preserve the living culture of the Cherokee people in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

The Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail stretches 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine — and some of its most spectacular miles run right through our backyard in Upper East Tennessee and Western North Carolina.

First proposed in 1921 and completed in 1937, the AT passes through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve — where ancient peaks rise above 6,000 feet and misty valleys stretch to the horizon.

The Tennessee section winds through the Roan Highlands, past open balds with 360-degree views, through rhododendron tunnels and ancient hardwood forests. This is the land that shaped us — and the land that inspires every product we carry.

A Musical Legacy

— Bluegrass, Country & the Soul of Appalachia —

Upper East Tennessee didn't just birth country music — it lived it, breathed it, and passed it down through families like ours.

🎸

My Father's Music

A working man, a devoted musician, and a man of God — his music lives on at East Tennessee State University.

🎵Archived at ETSU Bluegrass Music Department
🎤Performed at the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville
🌙Graveyard shift at the local rayon factory
🤝Backed notable country & bluegrass performers

My father was a talented musician — a bluegrass and country player whose work is now preserved in the archives of East Tennessee State University, home to one of the only Bluegrass Music programs in the country where you can earn a full Bachelor of Arts degree. His music is part of the living history of this region.

He was a working man first. He pulled the graveyard shift at the local rayon factory — clocking out in the early morning hours, then climbing into the back seat of his lifelong friend's car, guitar in tow, and sleeping all the way to Nashville, Tennessee. They'd spend the weekend at the Ryman Auditorium — the Mother Church of Country Music — where he performed alongside notable artists of the era. Then they'd drive straight back so he could clock in for the night shift again.

He never chased fame. He chased the music. And the music was always in service of something greater.

"God and Family first."

— The creed he lived by
🏠

Before He Was Kenny Chesney

I attended East Tennessee State University — and on weekends, I'd watch a young student perform at an old Victorian home on the banks of the Nolichucky River, converted into a Mexican restaurant. That student was Kenny Chesney — before the world knew his name, before the stadiums and the No. 1 hits. He was just a kid from Luttrell, Tennessee, playing his heart out on a weekend night. These mountains have a way of producing greatness quietly, before anyone is watching.

🎓

ETSU: Where Bluegrass Is a Degree

East Tennessee State University in Johnson City is one of the only universities in America where you can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old-Time & Country Music Studies. The program preserves the living tradition of Appalachian music — and my father's archived recordings are part of that legacy. His music didn't just entertain; it became part of the historical record of a culture that shaped American music as we know it.

📻

Bristol, TN — Birthplace of Country Music

In August 1927, Ralph Peer of the Victor Talking Machine Company set up recording equipment in Bristol, Tennessee — just up the road from where we grew up. The Bristol Sessions launched the careers of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and gave birth to commercial country music. The Library of Congress has declared these recordings among the most culturally significant in American history. This is our backyard. This is our heritage.

Roots of the Mountain

Upper East Tennessee and Western North Carolina — a land of ancient mountains, Cherokee heritage, pioneer spirit, and living tradition.

Ancient Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains are among the oldest on Earth — formed over 480 million years ago, they once rivaled the Himalayas in height. Today their rounded peaks and deep hollows hold a biodiversity found nowhere else on the planet.

Pioneer Spirit

The Overmountain Men — Appalachian frontiersmen from the region — played a decisive role in the American Revolution at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Their rugged independence and mountain grit defined the Appalachian character for generations.

Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park — straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border — is the most visited national park in America, welcoming over 12 million visitors annually. Its ancient forests contain more tree species than all of northern Europe.
